Brake pads are toast

Last night I replace the front left caliper on the ‘vette because it was leaking. Turns out brake pads will absorb brake fluid which turns them into mush.

Kinja'd!!!

The pad was soft to the touch and I broke that chunk off with my hands without much effort. The pad has been soaking in brake fluid for a week or so until I had time to work on it. Guess I should have done this sooner. I never knew brake fluid could do this though, brake fluid is some nasty stuff.

Wow! I knew brake fluid + brake pads = bad, but I had no idea. Seems like a poor design, but I guess they’re never supposed to be exposed to each other.

Yea, the seal on the piston was shot so I’m assuming the brake fluid just slowly leaked out over the week and was absorbed by the pad as it dripped down. I never knew that it was this bad though to mix pads and fluid.

Organic or non?

Organic I think, the pads are old, over 20 years at least

So are calipers, I’m going to go ahead and replace all of the calipers since 2 of 4 already sprang leaks.
